EU approves 18th package of sanctions against Russia
The EU adopted its 18th package of sanctions against Moscow on Friday, including a ceiling on Russian oil exports, diplomatic sources told Agence France-Presse. The latest package of sanctions will lower the G7 ceiling on the price of Russian oil to $47.60 a barrel, diplomatic sources told Reuters.
“We now have an agreement on an 18th package of strong and effective sanctions against Russia,” a diplomat said in Brussels at the end of a meeting of EU ambassadors on Friday morning.
Ukraine’s new prime minister, Yulia Svirydenko, welcomed the new sanctions. “By targeting ships, banks, and networks that support Russia’s war, this package increases pressure where it is needed. There is still much to be done. But every step taken with clarity and determination helps bring the end of Russia’s war closer,” she wrote on X.
President Volodymyr Zelensky also thanked everyone who contributed, adding that he had cooperated with the European Union on these sanctions.
“This decision is essential and timely, especially now, in response to Russia’s intensified brutality of strikes on our cities and villages,” he said on his social media accounts.
“At this point, it would be counterproductive to continue blocking the 18th package of sanctions tomorrow,” Fico said in a video message posted on Facebook on Thursday.
EU ambassadors met on Friday morning to approve the new sanctions.
Last month, the European Commission proposed the 18th package of sanctions against Russia for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, targeting Moscow’s energy revenues, banks and military industry.
